PREREQUISITES | EASY Rated Project
For these projects, students should have a good working knowledge of knitting basics, including how to make a slip knot, casting on, the knit stitch and binding off. Student must print project at home. Techniques to complete project at home will be covered including:

Purl Stitch
Stockinette Stitch
2 x 2 Rib Stitch
Decreasing
Yarn/Color Change
Binding Off in Pattern
Seaming Mattress Stitch
Gauge 17.5 sts and 24.4 rows ~ 4” in Stockinette St

Class Questions:
1) What is a #4, Medium Weight Yarn?

According to the Craft Yarn Council of America’s Yarn Standards (recommendations) #4 Medium Weight Yarn is a category described by the Craft Yarn Council of America in the Standard Yarn Weight System. This class of yarn range includes: Worsted , Afghan, and Aran weights. The Knit Gauge Range for this yarn category in Stockinette stitch to 4 inches = 16–20 sts or 4 - 5 spi (stitches per inch). The Recommended Needle U.S. Size for this Range are sizes 7 to 9 (as a starting point as you should use whatever needle size needed to obtain gauge given in the pattern you will be working on with the yarn weight specified). For example, Caron Simply Soft recommends a US 8 size needle but this pattern calls for Both US 6 & 7 putting the GAUGE out of the worsted category ( 16–20 per 4”) and into the dk (double knit 21–24 per 4” ) category.

However, this yarn category according to the Ravelry Standard Yarn Weights differs somewhat and uses a system of yarn plys, wraps per inch (wpi), measured on an inch ruler over an inch, stitches per 4” and omits the mysterious afghan category completely. The two categories that remain are:

Worsted /10 ply/9 wpi Knit gauge 4” = 20 stitches
Aran /10 ply/8 wpi Knit gauge 4” = 18 stitches

Furthermore, Lion Brand yarn gives us a glimpse into the international view that there are two yarns in the Worsted Category they are: Afghan and Aran.

In the end, you want to consider purchasing a yarn that will yield the spi your designer intended for their project by reading the yarn label.

2) How do I cast on in Rib using the long tail method?
Link: Rib Cast-on.

3) Why are my edge stitches Uneven?

One of the most common errors is picking up an extra stitch at the end of the row when you knit into the loop of the stitch below. To avoid this, check the last stitch as it goes on the right needle. Also be sure the first stitch at the beginning of a row is snug so loops from the stitches below do not wrap around the needle creating what looks like two stitches.
Also, the beginning of a row is where knitters accidentally add most stitches. Tug on the edge of the knitting to identify the first stitch to be knitted. Be sure the yarn is behind the work for knitting and in front for purling. Accidental yarn overs will add stitches on the edge, as well as in the middle of the row. Be sure to knit in the stitch and not the bar between the stitches. Check to see if yarn in the stitches is not split.

4) Where do I find a 4” and 5” lucite measuring square?
Follow the two links below in homework paragraph.

Homework:
1) Make 5”x 5” Gauge swatch using the needles and yarn chosen for project. Cast on 23 sts using long tail method (this method the cast on row is the knit (RS) row, the second row is purled. Continue alternating Knit, Purl Rows in stockinette until measuring 5” square.
With a 4” lucite measuring square, (Omnigrid 4 x 4 " Ruler or Omnigrid 5 x 5" Ruler) to count the stitches and rows within square.

Gauge Adjustments- If your swatch (stitches and rows per 4”) measures smaller, knit another swatch using the next larger size needles. If it measures larger, knit another swatch using the next smaller size needles. Work your gauge swatch until you come as close as possible to the gauge called for.

2) Start a Linus Project Page on Ravelry. Add the yarn you will be using (take picture of yarn and post if you want), the needle size(s) you will be using, swatch notes, and pictures of work in progress and any thoughts that may help a fellow beginner knitter through the process.
