I got Elizabeth Zimmermann’s book out of the library to get hold of this pattern.
I heard it being mentioned so much and it has intrigued me for so long that I am happy to finally have a reason to knit up one of these
It’s a win/win/win.

The pattern is written well enough for me, but I did enjoy to watch a couple of videos as confidence builders.

Once in a while I do a stitch count to make sure that I am still on the right track. The stitches between the decrease stitches should be the same number as the sum of the beginning and ending stitch count. Add the two decrease sts, this means that I get to 90 sts when I have 22 sts on the sides ( for the sleeves) and 44 sts in the middle ( for the back) plus 2=90
This makes this part an easy take along project.

Ready for the increases to shape the back and fronts. Fun, fun, fun

On the increases now. Have to increase to 114 sts to add back fullness which means 28 sts on either end and 56 sts in the middle plus the two center sts of the diagonals. Placing a small marker after the first 22 sts at the beginning of the row, then I only have to count to 6 more. Actually the marker is there already from the decreases
For M1 I M1R and M1L. I also added stitch markers left and right of the center miter stitch.

With the help of the knitting calculator ( yes, I am too lazy to do the math myself) , I do the 10 sts increase for fullness of the back this way:
K3, (m1,k5) 2x, (m1, k6) 5x, (m1, k5) 2x, m1, k3
Knitting calculator
Another seven increases later ( at 35/ 80/ 35 plus 2), I am already at the neck bind off!!

Bound off the five sts for the neck and after another foir increases ( 34/ 88/ 34 plus the two center sts) I am working on the 90 center sts only for the back.
Rather than keeping all of the sts on one needle, I am keeping the sts I am not working on on one long circular needle and work the 90 center sts ( for the back) on a separate needle.
This is coming along nicely.

I finished the 10 ridges and advise to mark the first picked up stitch on either side of the center sts as those two stitches become the center stitch for further double increases. That way you will not need to count to the 44th and 135th stitch.
I started on the button band and because I am so close to finishing, I decided to use a few yards of blue Red Heart yarn and some Sugar n’ Cream cotton rather than starting a whole new ball of yarn. The Red Heart is a little thicker, but I think I can get away with it and on the plus side the button rows may be stronger.

Placing button holes on the left side only ( for a boy) and marking the corresponding stitches on the other side for button placement.
Spacing the buttons as follows:
k6, yo, (k2tog, k7, yo) four times ending in k2tog, k2, m1.
Finished except for the seaming and sewing on buttons.
I used the original yarn for the BO, working a regular BO except for two sts on each corner when I used Jenny’s stretchy bind off.
I worked a total of 8 rows in different yarn and was left with just over two yards of the Loops & Threads.
I am very pleased with the result.

Washed, blocked and crocheted the sleeves and shoulders.
