The katia paint yarn is a gift from someone who went to Spain last year (2019).
I almost immediately decided on this pattern, but kept looking for a Solid dark brown as a second Color. Not wanting to go out much during the pandemic of 2020 I looked through my stash and think I could pull it off using as a second color the white cotton yarn I have left over from a baby blanket I recently knitted. HOWEVER I only have 363 yards of the yarn.
August 10: I did. go to a LYS after all and got the Quince & Co Chickadee yarn. I am glad I did. The contrast will be more stunning.
Now I need to decide if I want to use a size 7 or 6 needle. Looking good on US#6. Happy that I finally started.
What keeps me going is to see the next color emerging and the next, and the one after that…
A little reminiscent of entrelac knitting.
August 20 : Finished section 1.
I used 23 g of the BLACK
and 58 g of the PAINT.
I actually had to restart section 2, because at first I picked up stitches between the garter ridges and that didn’t look right especially where you have the dark stripes. You really do need to pick up right in the ridge; lesson learned.
I must say that I am not quite sure about the gauge count of stitch to row here ( it puckers a little), but I think that after blocking and after doing the I-cord edging all around it will look ok.
August 21 ( my sons wedding day, yet I spent time knitting while waiting for the evening to arrive and the very small ceremony to begin).
Finished part 2,
used 18 g BLACK
and 4 g PAINT
August 22 and 23 : so much Blue that I ended up cutting out 11g of it and got to a different shade in the last few sections of part 3. Finished part 3 ….OR SO I THOUGHT…
I did knit 64 rows as it says to do for part 3 and I did have 35 sts on my RN and 65 sts on my LN after my final WS row, so I was looking at it from the reverse side. My error became immediately clear when I read the instructions for part 4 and there was nothing else to do but to re-join my yarn and carry on with section 3. The designer did advise to read ALL instructions, but especially because I didn’t print them, I only read part to part or I would have recognized my error sooner.
I do however think that “knit 65 rows“ should be corrected to knit “65 garter ridges”. Not a biggie. I think I may also still be tired from the wonderful wedding celebrations ( small wedding party of 11 due to the corona virus restrictions).
Since I had to cut the yarn at the end of this section anyway I cut out another 14 g of the darker shade blue before re-joining for part 4.
Used 15 g BLACK
14 g PAINT
August 23, 24 and 25: Finished Section 4. I did not bind off since I will have to pick up sts for the I -cord border anyway.
Used 25 g BLACK
24 g PAINT
This is a fantastic tutorial video on how to work the I-cord: Bind Off
Applying the I-cord edge: To avoid color blips, I picked up and knit stitches all around ( except for the life sts I already have).
Since the two corners on the bottom of the shawl are on an angle larger than 90 degree and I don’t have to bridge a full 270 degree, I only work two rows on those corners.
The top corners being smaller than 90 degree ( perhaps 45 degree?) need more rows to go around the corner and I worked four rows here.
