This is not from the kit or the original pattern, but copied from looking at the pictures.
I have done enough mosaic knitting to know how this stitch/ look works.
I already had enough Rios in my stash when I saw this pattern, so didn’t buy a kit. It’s easy enough to work the pattern, but it means that I am going with a more monochromatic look and will use the white Aran yarn as CC throughout. This was left over from the wedding blanket ( click on the link) I had made for our son and his wife incorporating yarn my Mother in Law had given me. So it’s almost like a heirloom; one seed planting the next.
June 27: with the red scarf project almost done, ai finally cast on this blanket to have an easy project going while meeting and chatting with other knitters.
Cast on 245 sts in I-cord cast on using very Pink Knit‘s method.
Cast on with the smaller needle, then switch to #9.
Slipping the first three stitches of every row for an I-cord edging all around.
Needles : I decided on bigger needles to give the blanket a softer drape and make the “ dots” pop more
Side I-cords: It took me several rows to figure out how to keep the I-cord edging at the beginning and end of the row neat. It is easy enough with the darker yarn, but it took me a while to realize that I should not slip any sts in the last three sts of a row, but knit them on the RS and Purl them on the WS.
Note on yarn usage: About 7 1/2 yards of white yarn for every dotted section.
In other words one ball of the Hayfield yarn should be enough for 122 dots sections.
I calculated the length and need enough for 144 dot sections.
And that’s why I used Malabrigo worsted in some sections rather than buying more Hayfield.
August 2022: I am getting a little tired of the rather dull/ monochrome color scheme and wonder if I should flip half way and have the white as MC with colored dots in the black, gray etc. Probably won’t do it, but store away the idea for another project.
Also I am glad that I have SOME colored Rios; what a difference that makes!
August 28: I have just been gifted another skein of Rios, a deep dark blue
End of August to end of October:
Took a long break from this while visiting family in Europe.
October 2022: Over the weekend I pulled out the slip stitch blanket I was working on beforeI took a trip to visit family this Fall and I was happily surprised to see how far I have come already ( 36 inches). At the same time I am a bit daunted by the task of finishing it, but I have plenty of time as this is a gift to myself for my 70th which is not for another 14 months. I am having fun deciding on which color to use next and reminisce about where the yarn comes from. All of the white is left over from the wedding blanket I had knitted for my son and his wife and the other colors are left over from a sweater and a cowl I had made for my other two children. Plus it’s interspersed by yarn my daughter-in-law gifted me and still some other skeins were gifts from a very dear friend
January 2023:
Finally, I posted about this on my Facebook page:
WIP/ FO WEDNESDAY
I stepped into the new year with only a couple of UFO’s ( unfinished objects) and am quite proud that I finished my Malabrigo Rios slip stitch blanket just before the end of 2022.
I started the blanket last summer and it is almost entirely made out of remnants from previous knitting projects.
The white yarn is Hayfield Aran, Malabrigo Worsted and Tosh Vintage for the final rows and I-cord bind off. All leftover from previous projects.
All of the colored yarns are Malabrigo Rios from previous knitting projects plus some gifted yarn and a few skeins I purchased when a LYS had closing sales. It gives me such warm memories to know what I used the yarn for before some of it ended up in the blanket.
Each of my kids are represented that way and that makes it so special.
Check out the pictures and see for yourself; better yet, look at your stash and leftovers from all your holiday knitting and make your own memory blanket
Check it out on ravelry, too: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/Strickliese/malabrigo-sl...
