Notes

A mother daughter set of hats for my niece and her baby girl.
Claire told me that baby girl doesn’t keep her hat on unless it has a tie or something to help keep it on. I thought to make a matching hat for Mom. Perhaps when baby sees Mom wear a hat, she will want to wear one, too. Also that hat will not be out-grown smiling_face_with_3_hearts

2.17. Just read about Christina Bain. So sad….I feel I should dedicate this project to her since she made many matchies with her daughter Marlowe and even with the toy monkey. heavy_heart_exclamation_mark_ornamentheavy_heart_exclamation_mark_ornament
Funny how I was thinking along the same lines right at this time.
So much sadness ; let’s try and wash away the sadness with love…

2.21. I don’t really like the stop and go with this pattern, but there is no way around it. I had to block the first part of the adult size hat before picking up sts and I am glad I am blocking it to size.

3.2. I am knitting the two hats in tandem.
For the smaller hat I use directions for large child and small child on a smaller gauge and smaller needles with thinner yarn. I am using fingering yarn on its own for the cabled Band, then double it with the Aloft for the body of the hat , much as I did for my RIANT pullover. I like the softer look and feel of the two strands together, but avoid it close to the face and eyes as I worry that baby could get fuzzies in her eyes from the yarn.
Started at the decreases.
The pattern is certainly labor intensive, but I can see that the outcome will be special and sweet.

3.3. Both hats just need the garter edge, twists and Pompoms.

3.4. Finished both garter edges and the adult hat fits me perfectly, so should be fine for Mom. Waiting for measurements of baby‘s head before binding off. Earlobe to earlobe measurement of the cap is 14.5“ at this point and I think it should be fine for a one year old ( turning one in August), but wanted to double check.
Then on to the twists and Pompoms. I don’t like making Pompoms and may buy one in gray for the smaller hat.

3.7. Baby measures at 12.5”; so the size should fit her well throughout this coming Winter.

3.8. Attached the twists on both hats; I made the twists for the baby hat 16” long instead of 18”.
Now on to the Pompoms.
Although I know how to make Pompoms, I would have liked to review the YouTube video suggested in the pattern. Unfortunately the link didn’t open for me ( I did let the designer know), so instead, I found a YouTube video on my own which has some neat tips and tricks for easy clean-up
