Watching the Twilight movie series, I noticed the nice hat Bella wears in “Eclipse”. So I took a basic hat pattern and started counting. This is my result - with a tiny change at the crown top as I ran out of the green tweed yarn. But this is indicated below.

Design process:

Watching the movies on BluRay, I took several photos from the screen while pausing the scenes when Bella wears the hat to have a (fairly) good example to count rows. Even though there are some patterns for this hat already on Ravelry, I didn’t trust them and wanted to count myself! I attach them here for you so you might do the same if you want! ;)

The main difficulty in creating a similiar look was to find the right yarn color shades. I searched through my stash - no “greyish”-green yarn, no grey yarn.. gah! So I went to my favorite LYS and browsed literally all green yarns there, especially the ones from Brooklyn Tweed, as I love the texture of their Shelter yarn. Result: frustrated, either it was a bluish-green yarn (e.g. Button Jar from BT), a yellowish-green (Tent or Birdbook) or didn’t have tweed color speckles on it.. or it was cotton.. or silk… or mohair… whatever.

In one corner though was a basked with “yarn on sale”… and finally - voilá! One last skein of Rowan’s Felted Tweed in “Garden” colorway had - in my opinion - exactly the grey-green color Bella’s hat has… grey-green as the light in Forks’ woods! ;)

I also noticed, that Bella seems to have a huge head, considered the photos from the side. ;) I researched a bit and found out, that she actually wore a wig in the movie, so they obviously designed the hat bigger so it would fit over her wig! As I like loose fitting hats (better for keeping freshly washed hair in shape ;)), I made a size-L version of my basic hat pattern. It’s huge, but sits on my head like a little warm cloud. :)

Bella’s hat pattern in my version (without explanations, for more experienced knitters)

Cast on

Cast on 96sts in color Green for size L hat with needle US 7 /4,5mm (fits head 23 inch/58,42cm; size M fits head 22 inch/55,88cm) and a 40cm cable

Establish ribbing:

Knit k1,p1-ribbing for 13 rounds in color Green and with needle US 7 /4,5mm

Knit body

Switch to needle US 8 / 5mm and start hat body with a knit round, also in green. Follow color pattern as described below for the next 34 rounds.

• Green: k2 rnds
• Grey: k5 rnds
• Green: k3 rnds
• Grey: k2 rnds
• Green: k1 rnd
• Grey: k3 rnds
• Green: k5 rnds
• Grey: k2 rnds
• Green: k3 rnds
• Grey: k1 rnd
• Green: k2 rnds
• Grey: k5 rnds

Decrease

• Knit setup round: K11 in green yarn (all green from now on), k2tog, PM around (= 9 equal sections divided by 9 markers)
• Next 3 rounds: Knit to 2 sts before every marker, k2tog around
• Switch to Dpns (size US 8 / 5mm) and continue decrease rounds until you have approximately 12 sts left or it becomes too uncomfortable to knit.

Finish

• Cut the yarn and draw the yarn tail through the remaining live sts. Pull to close the top of the hat and sew in the yarn end.
• Wash gently if desired, don’t block or it will fit twice your head. ;)
• Put hat on
• Feel like Bella while Edward is kissing her head (or - alternatively - like being carried in Jacob’s arms through the forest ;)))

Commented version with all changes and explained mistakes

Cast on

Following a basic hat pattern, I cast on 96 sts in color Green for a size L hat (fits head 23 inch/58,42cm; size M fits head 22 inch/55,88cm, cast on 90 sts for this), using needles US 7 /4.5mm for the brim, joining for working in the round on a 40cm cable.

I also counted 9 wedges for the decrease at the hat’s crown, which became a problem as my cast-on stitch number (96) isn’t dividable by 9 (and this is important as you have to place your stitch markers evenly 9 times over all stitches when beginning to decrease)… but as I’m a little stubborn and wanted a similar look as much as possible, I had to find a solution later. ;)

If you want to recreate the hat, I recommend though either:

• casting on 99 sts (Be careful, this is HUGE!!!) from the beginning, if you want to have 9 wedges at the hat crown
• casting on 90 sts (I would do this next time, a tighter fit and both dividable by 9 (for 9 wedges) or 6 (for 6 wedges))!

Establish Ribbing

Knit k1,p1-ribbing for 13 rounds in color Green and with needle US 7 /4,5mm (I knit only 12 rounds here because of my fear the green yarn wouldn’t be enough).

Knit Body

Switch to needle US 8 / 5mm and start hat body with a knit round, also in green. Follow color pattern as described above for the next 34 rounds. This should create a knitted “tube” you can try on, if it fits your head in length and to estimate, how many decrease rounds you’ll need to adjust your look (more or less slouchy hat).

When it came to decreases to shape the crown, I ran into the problem as mentioned above: Divide 96 sts by 9 for creating 9 decrease wedges… great… I’m a genius knitter… ;) … so I had to improvise and when starting the setup round for the decrease, I added 3 sts (M1R) - evenly distributed - while placing the markers, so I had 99 sts to count with and got an even number of sts for the wedges… without changing much in the hat’s shape or size. Certainly not a professional solution, but it worked. ;)
Instructions given below are written though as if you were more clever than I and already cast on 99 sts in the beginning…

Decreases

• Knit setup round: K11 in green yarn (all green from now on), k2tog, PM around (= 9 equal sections divided by 9 markers)
• Next 3 rounds: Knit to 2 sts before every marker, k2tog around
• switch to Dpns (size US 8 / 5mm) and continue decrease rounds until you have approximately 12 sts left or it becomes too uncomfortable to knit.

As you can see from the pictures, I had to add a small grey part into the green hat crown, as my green yarn ran out.. checking the movie pictures though, the crown is only green, so adjust to your liking.

I decided to decrease in every round, once I placed the markers, because I wanted that “flat” look Bella’s hat has - without any slouch. If you prefer a more slouchy hat, just add one or two rounds plainly knitting every stitch and without knitting any stitches together in between the “k2tog” rounds (so for example go like

• K11, k2tog, PM around, then
• k1 round, then
• knit to 2 sts before marker, k2tog around.
• k1 round
• knit to 2sts before marker, k2tog around
• k1 round etc…

Check from time to time by trying your hat on how slouchy it becomes.

Finish

• Cut the yarn and draw the yarn tail through the remaining live sts.
• Pull to close the top of the hat and sew in the yarn end.
• Wash gently if desired, don’t block or it will fit twice your head. ;)
• Put hat on
