I just wanted a very simple hat with a rustic look, adding a touch of outdoorsy style to formal dark city winter clothes.
I knit this pattern before here in a slightly different version (9 wedges for the hat crown instead of 6), but in the same yarn and improved it to make the hat fit even better.
Cast on
Cast on 96 sts for size L hat (fits head 23 inch/58,42cm) with needle US 7 /4,5mm and a 40cm cable
Establish ribbing
Knit k1,p1-ribbing for 13 rounds, still with needle US 7 /4,5mm
Knit body
Switch to needle US 8 / 5mm and k25 rounds.
Decrease
- Knit setup round: K14, k2tog, PM around (= 6 equal sections divided by 6 markers)
- k1 round
- Next 3 rounds: Knit to 2 sts before every marker, k2tog around (66 sts)
- Switch to Dpns US 8 / 5mm and continue decrease rounds (I did 8 rounds) until you have approximately 12 sts left or it becomes too uncomfortable to knit.
Note: I decided to decrease in almost every round, once I placed the markers, because I wanted that “flat” look for the hat - without any slouch. If you prefer a more slouchy hat, just add one or two rounds plainly knitting every stitch and without knitting any stitches together in between the “k2tog” rounds (so for example go like
- K14, k2tog, PM around, then
- K1 round, then
- Knit to 2 sts before marker, k2tog around.
- K1 round
- Knit to 2sts before marker, k2tog around
- k1 round etc…
Finish
-
Cut the yarn and draw the yarn tail through the remaining live sts.
-
Pull to close the top of the hat and sew in the yarn end.
-
Wash gently if desired, don’t block or it will fit twice your head. ;)
