DD saw this in the Knit Picks catalog.
FYI: It appears not all Ravelers are sewing the placket in correctly. It should extend into the ribbing so the top part is sewn to the folded ribbing around the face.
The pattern was clever and well worth the $1.99 I paid. But it’s not a project for a beginner. The instructions are vague and the pattern layout is confusing. A schematic would have been nice. Or maybe clearer photos. But, in any event, the finished hood is adorable.
Mods and Tweaks:
I didn’t wet block it. I just steam blocked it over a styrofoam wig form to open up the cables a little. IMHO, a severe blocking will destroy all the nice squishy ribbing and probably make the finished hood huge.
I sewed the back of the hood up with mattress stitch after I finished the ribbing around the face. I tacked the ribbing down in 3 places to keep it from flipping forward. I also tucked a bit of the tip of the hood into the wrong side and sewed it into a triangle then tacked it down. The uber-pointy hood wasn’t doing anything for me.
If I make this again, I’ll use a provisional cast on. Then it would be easy to close the seam at the back of the hood portion with a three-needle bind off or by grafting it. The seam is really unnecessary.
I didn’t bind off the 108 sts around the face. I just left them on a spare needle. I’m not sure what binding off accomplishes. I only had to pick up a few sts from each side before beginning the 2x2 ribbing around the face. I worked that ribbing with a selvage st at the beginning and end of the row.
I also added a selvage stitch to the bottom ribbing so I can sew the placket to it. In other words, I started and ended the ribbing on the bottom with a knit stitch (RS facing).
If you follow the instructions as written, you will end up binding off the bottom ribbing on a WS row because the first row you work is a WS row (i.e., you pick up the sts with the RS facing and then work the first row of ribbing with the WS facing. So an even number of rows leaves you with the WS facing). I’m not sure it matters, but I’m guessing the designer didn’t intend that so I’m working 13 rows before binding off so the RS is facing.
There’s an error in the placket instructions. When the first stitch is a knit stitch, it should be slipped as if to knit. When it’s a purl stitch, it should be slipped as if to purl. The instructions have you slip as if to knit on both the knit and purl stitches.
