I knitted several hats for the crocheted bears I made for the Mother Bear Project in January 2018. I knitted the hats flat from the brim, doing some shaping for the final rows at the top, then seamed them.

The pompoms were made with a Clover pom-pom maker (the pink one). Each pom-pom uses a combination of hat yarn and the bear’s pajamas yarn.

I tried two or three different hat styles, before finally settling on a favorite one. See the maroon, periwinkle and leaf green hats.

Knitted Bear Hat Pattern:

CO 36
3 rows of reverse stockinette for a purl border. (36 sts)
Knit rows of stockinette until hat is 3 inches. (36 sts)

Start decreases as follows. Work all purl sides even.

On next knit side, k2tog every five sts (30 sts)
On next knit side, k2tog every four sts (24 sts)
On next knit side, k2tog every three sts (18 sts)
On next knit side, k2tog every two sts (12 sts)
Work the final purl side, even.

Cast off. Sew seam and synch up top. Attach pom-pom securely to hat.

Sew hat to the back of the bear’s head, with the hat’s seam to the back.

Benito’s colorful hat was made in the same way as above, except that I added two rows of reversed stockinette after about 5-6 rows of stockinette and a final single row of reverse stockinette just before the decreases.

Anton’s blue hat is the first of the five hats I made. It is taller than the other hats and has a ribbed edging, but was otherwise made in similar manner to the other hats. The ribbing is K2 P2 for 3 rows.
