A WW 2 teenager, my mother never lost her skill to make something out of nothing. It is about 30 years ago that she made me a blouse of about a yard of fabric. It’s one of my favorite blouses, but yes, it is definitely now using “substance”.
Since the blouse “pattern” is so simple (see photo), I’ve been wanting to weave something like this blouse for years now. This is an attempt to do just that.
I hope to achieve several objectives: I would like to have a top that replaces my favorite blouse. This is a first attempt to create a blouse using woven hexagons. I want to try weaving the new Berroco Remix Light on the TURTLE Loom.
I’m using two strands of Remix Light to weave the hexagons. Why not use Remix instead? The basket weave with the thinner yarn makes a denser fabric without being too thick and stiff.
Since the hexagons are so modular, I should be able to get closely to a good fit. My first estimate is that I will need 7 hexagons across per row, and go about 8 rows up. 56 hexagons for front/back, 112 hexagons in total.
Colors: The bottom is “old jeans”, with one transitional stripe in the middle (one strand of each color), the top is “mist”.
Let the games begin!

It’s been a while, but I’m happy to say that the idea of a simple blouse morphed into a first, sleeveless top!
Since I started this project, we’ve added the fine sett looms that are perfect for yarns like Remix Light, so now we can weave a dense fabric with a nice drape, woven single stranded.
The Flower Top that resulted out of the idea does not have the blouse closure, which I will keep for another design, but the wearability is very comparable to that magic blouse that my Mom made for me so many years ago.
More info about the Flower Top is on the turtleloom blog.
