Notes

It’s been years since I made shorts or pants, so I’m really looking forward to these Forsyth Shorts!

Determining the size has been a first challenge: Being an overweight person with small hips, my waist measures 43” and the hip circumference is 47”. I made the decision to go by hip circumference, so the pattern size I plan to make is 35” (which is 35” in waist and 48” for hip circumference). That is also the size that the model is wearing in the pattern photos, and I think it should/might work for me.

Choice of needle size: I knit loosely, and based on experience I go down .5mm in needle size from what Berroco patterns use.

My summer is heating up with other tasks, but I’m looking forward to “stitching slowly”.

On to swatching!

July 11, 2024 Swatch Notes

Swatch is done, and I casted on.

Stitch count is right on, but row count is way off. May be impacted by the fact that I knit continental.

I decided to go down a needle size (size 2 for everything) and will watch the row count as I work.

July 31, 2024 What I would do differently next time

It’s done, and I’m delighted with the results. There will definitely be a “next time”.

  • I’m glad that I went with the hip measurement … for me, this works better.
  • I thought of picking up the waistband stitches while knitting but then decided to pass. I think this is certainly an alternative worth mentioning, particularly for people who don’t like to sew 200+ stitches to their need-to-be-found counterpart stitches.
  • Buy the elastics before you start knitting. I could not get elastics as wide as asked for, and now the waistband tunnel is a little bit wider than necessary. If I would have bought the waistband in the beginning, I could have made the tunnel smaller. No big deal, just a little touch.
