Notes

I’m using the Berroco Spring/Summer ‘22 Yarn Tasting kit and one ball of the new Berroco Spree to make a pair of Lindgren Socks.

The idea is to use the tasting kit yarns for the toes, heel, and hem, as well as the stripes, while the Spree will be the “main” background color.

I’m only using the “new” yarns off the yarn tasting kit. I’ll use the Summer Sesame for another project.

Because I want to make sure that I don’t run out of yarn for any of the small balls, I knit TAAT (one needle).

For the stripe work in the foot and leg portion I split the tasting kit yarn into 2 equal mini balls, to avoid tangling. While not in use, I “store” those mini balls inside the respective sock (oh, the glory of toe-up, where the socks-in-progress provide a nice storage pouch).

All other colors, and for Spree, I use the outer end for one sock and the inner tail fro the other.

The toes and the heel are worked individually, since the Lindgren pattern requires to re-arrange stitches, I decided that I might as well just work those parts off the TAAT.

Needles I used::
Knitters Pride dreamz, US 2.5/3mm and US 1.5/2.5mm, 40” long.
For the toes and the heels: KnitPickes 6” dpn, rainbow, US2/3mm

Yarn Choices

When I planned this project, I wasn’t sure if the kit alone would be enough for a pair of socks (by now I think it would, or at least if you work toe-up, you could knit while supplies last to get at least some footies).

Reading through the yarn descriptions I decided that the new Spree would make a fine “base” for a pair of socks: A smooth yarn with 56% wool and 44% cotton.

For the foot section, I chose to use yarn samples with little structure:

  • Toe in Spree (using the color that came with the yarn tasting kit)
  • Stripes in the foot section Isola (smooth, strong yarn)
  • Heel in Meraki (has little structure, but cotton and hemp sound like a sturdy solution for a heel)

In the leg section I added Vivo stripes, which is a more vivid thick and thin yarn. Since the colors blended in with the Spree that I’m usign]]n, I decided to knit one row, purl one row, to make the Vivo more visis .

That leaves us with the Pimo Soft for a super soft and comfy hem … and so it shall be!

Final Thoughts

This was fun all around, and the socks turned out perfect.

I’m adding a “sock anatomy” photo that shows where I used the yarn tasting yarns, and it also shows how much is left of each little ball.

All the leftovers made me curious … would the yarn tasting kit alone have been enough to make the pair of socks? The answer is “most likely”. The pair of socks weighs 2.6 oz, and the five mini balls weigh 3.6 oz … I see another sock project in my near future …
