People asked:
- What to do with leftover yarn from Marit
- More ideas for Ultra Wool Handpainted
- Small project to try more Entrelac
… and I had one more color of Ultra Wool Handpainted that’s not assigned to a project idea yet: Daiquiri.
Long story short, the answer is to make some Marit Mitts:
- You will use the Berroco Marit pattern.
- Use any of your leftovers, about 100 yards is what I needed for one pair for women’s medium size.
- One ball of Ultra Wool Handpaint is enough to make two pairs of mitts.
- Knit the yarn to a 20 sts/4” gauge (same yarn as for the Marit shawl, just a much tighter gauge).
- Use fewer stitches/rows for each square: Follow the Marit instructions, but substitute 12sts/24rows with 8sts/16 rows to get the women’s medium size. Tip: If you need your mitts smaller/bigger, just adjust the number of stitches/rows that you will work for each square.
Instructions
- For the first block, cast on 8 sts. Work 8 garter ridges.
- Follow the Marit pattern and work four tiers (4 blocks).
- Work decrease tiers (see following) until all squares have been worked off. The knitting will result in a square.
For Decrease Tiers, work the following to decrease blocks along the sides:
- At the beginning of a Tier, do not work the ‘First Block’. Instead, bind off 7 sts of the first block on the left needle. You will have one sts on the right needle.
- On the first ‘Repeat Block’, pick up only 7 sts along the selvage edge of the block below, skipping the first garter ridge. The remaining stitch from the bind-off will serve as the 8th sts for this block.
- Continue to work ‘Repeat Blocks’ as needed.
- At the end of a Tier, do not work the ‘Last Block’. It will automatically form a smooth, decreasing edging.
Assembly
- Fold the square, wrong side facing out, as shown on the picture.
- Use one tail to sew along one square (for the hand part).
- Use the other tail to sew along two squares (for the wrist part).
- Leave the remaining square length open as the thumb opening.
- Turn the mit right side out and enjoy!
