This needle case is another great first project!

A friend wanted to make a needle case for her mom for embroidery needles, so we started brainstorming. For my prototype I just picked some yarn that was on hand, my friend will use very pretty, sparkly yarn for “the real thing”!

Funny enough, two days after I finished my prototype, somebody on FB asked for suggestions for a needle case that would fit into a reenactment setting of the early 1800. Well, now the prototype couldn’t have fit better!

Here’s to how to do it:

  • Make two hexagons of preferably thicker yarn as covers. Tip: To get a leather look, consider making those covers of the Berroco Suede yarn. More tips: You could embroider initials on the front cover, or needle felt a little something as embellishment.
  • Make 2 - 3 hexagons as pages that will hold the needles. I used three strands of the Aunt Lydia’s crochet thread, but remember that you can use any yarn as long as it is worsted. Cotton or wool will protect the needles well and keep them in place.
  • Weave in the ends on your hexagons.
  • Crochet or lucet a tie, about 10” long, and two ties about 6” long each. I used the Berroco Suede, but you could use real leather strings or any ribbon that matches your design.
  • Stack your hexagons to form your book. With a crochet hook, pull the longer tie through all layers as shown in the picture and make a knot. Attach the shorter ties to the cover tips as shown in the picture.

Add your needles, and you’re done!
