Substituted yarn to make up for my inability to knit with alpaca. Gauge had to be thrown out the window. Am getting 9 spi on size 0 needles (I’m not sure I’d have gotten gauge with the called for yarn without a lot of work and stress on my wrists, but my yarn choice made it tougher.) So, I spent 4.5 hours and totally recharted the pattern to fit the measurements I need it to fit. Finished size will be an 8” hand.
I want to point out that the distance knitted after setting aside the thumbhole is very short; I’m meeting row gauge and I would have had a hard time getting the mitt to cover my knuckles at the base of my fingers and I don’t have particularly long hands either), so folks should take a look at that before they start to determine if they need to make adjustments for length in the hand in addition to any adjustments for gauge.
The charts are beautiful, but the watercolor rendering of the tiny boxes was a little difficult for me to read in spots (the box lines mostly disappear in some instances.) This isn’t a problem for me since I had to rechart the whole thing anyway, but it’s something to be aware of if that kind of thing annoys you. Also, I’d recommend trying to make sure you can get close to 12 spi with your yarns before buying the pattern, I glossed over that detail, assuming that the gauge was more in line with other patterns I’ve worked in fingering weight; I probably would have chosen another pattern after realizing the gauge issues except that this one was expensive enough that I needed to knit it, even if I had to do crazy amounts of work to get there.
