Using 38 stitches as 50 was too big.

I have decided to make the openwork mesh 30cm each side, then when the pattern has the most stitches on the needle I will knit 6cm of stockinette then go back to the mesh.

Then at the very end after it is blocked I will embroider on the stockinette part.
