Cast off for underarms after 7 full repeats of block pattern.

Noting back to start:

1 selvedge stitch each side. 119 stitches before underarms, main part of pattern.

With ribbing, pattern says to cast on 99 stitches, but I added 2 selvedge stitches. My waist is not as thin as a 1940s model and I was worried about the cast on edge so I actually cast on 126 stitches and then knit my first row of rib as k,p,k,p,p (extra purl after each 4 stitches) and then k2tog all the extra purls on row2 (WS).

I knit 54 rows of ribbing.

I increased from 101 to 119 in first row of pattern. I found it hard to work out where to add the increases initially, but found it easier if I added stitch markers evenly and then increased each time I reached one.

Need to pick up and knit 116 stitches around neck k1p1 ribbing for 9 rows.

I have a finished project! Since I like vintage-style items and I do not have a vintage-sized waistline I did alter how I cast on and off.

To ensure I’ll get more stretch without floppiness, I cast on 25% more stitches and knit k,p,k,pp and then on the next row (WS) I k2tog all the pp’s to get it back to 1:1 ribbing.

On the neck bind-off I increased every fourth purl and then cast off with 25% more stitches on the needle.

I find the resulting effect to be quite stretchy but nicer looking than Jeny’s SS bind-off.
