12/16/2011: Finished. This took every inch of yarn - weighs 160 grams (I had four balls but apparently they were short weight or one had been partly used). Perfect pattern for this yarn (or any similar color-change single). Toggle buttons sent along for custom placement.
Were I to knit this again, I would make the fronts more generous by knitting more rounds after the armholes and before the garter-stitch band; do the armholes after a plain round so as not to have YO gaps under the arms to sew up; and place the armholes differently so the end-of-round join didn’t end up centered on the collar.
Getting gauge on 5s (18 sts/4”)
Marked afterthought armholes at 18 sts between increases (after round 35, as in pattern) - approx. 12” diameter unblocked
Worked 12 more rounds stockinette to 24 sts between increases (per pattern)
Worked 6-row garter repeat 3x - 28 sts per section, then worked one more garter ridge - 67 rounds, 224 total stitches. Unblocked diameter: 20” excluding edging; 10” between armholes.
Tried the looped i-cord bindoff and found it too heavy and too fiddly, so instead used a simple crochet chain bindoff: slip stitch through next 3 knit stitches, chain 4, repeat around.
Sleeves: on 6s. Pick up 18 sts each side of armhole, plus one YO at each end (one per needle). Transfer to four DPNs. Round 1: knit around, knitting the YOs with the following stitch, twisting YOS to tighten them up - 36 sts. (YO gap at beg. of rnd will need to be sewn closed.) 24 rounds stockinette (4”), 36 rounds ribbing - about 10” long instead of 12”.
