I started this by taking my bust measurement, divide by 2 (for back piece and front piece) add 1 inch ease.
I made a stockinette swatch with 6mm needles to get my gauge and figured out how many stitches per inch I needed, adding a few more to allow for the 8 pattern repeat of the basketweave stitch.
I cast on the required stitches with 4mm needles and did a 2 by 2 rib for 2.5 inches. Swapped to 6mm needles to start the basketweave stitch.
Continued in basketweave until desired length to under arm. For the front, decreased for armholes and cast off 25 for the neckline, worked in pattern up one side for one of the tabbards whilst placing the stitches on the other side on stitch holders. Complete the other tabbard with same amount of rows. I worked 13 stitches for each tabbard (yours may be different). Similar for back but instead of casting off as per the tabbards, continue until last 2 rows, cast off central stitches and complete last two rows either side before casting off. Seam, pick up and knit with 4mm circular needles around arms and neckline and finish with 6 rows of 2x2 rib. Sew in ends.
I’m pretty pleased with it and it’ll suit me fine when working in the garden.
