I had to make some changes to the pattern in part because my yarn was a little small and in part because my hubby has large hands. Here is exactly what I did.
Cast on 40 stitches to US size 6 needles using a tubular stretchy cast on.
Pattern Rows 1-12: 1:1 rib (12 seemed a bit short so I did 14 rounds)
Switched to us size 8 needles.
Pattern Rows 13-15: I did 2 rounds of k all stitches followed by a round with 4 increases. I did a LLI and RLI one stitch from the end of each side of the mitten. Next row k all stitches. Then I did another round of 4 stitch increases so I now had 48 stitches per row. I then k all stitches one more time before starting the thumb gusset. I did 6 rows of Color B before starting the color work.
Pattern Rows 16-19: work as written
Pattern Row 20: worked twice
Pattern Row 21-37: work as written
Pattern Row 38: worked twice
Pattern Row 39: work as written
Pattern Row 40: work twice
Pattern Row 41-42: work as written
Pre Pattern Row 43: I added 2 rows of all stitches knit in color D before knitting row 43
Pattern Row 43-45: work as written
Pre Pattern Row 46: I added 2 rows of all stitches knit in color D before knitting row 46
Pattern Row 46-47: worked as written but without decreasing
Pre Pattern Row 48: 1 added 2 rows of stitches knit in Color C before knitting row 48
Pattern Row 48-49: worked as written but without decreasing.
Decreasing the top: after row 49, I worked the rest of the mitten in color B. I still neede to get a bit of length for the middle fingers so I decided to decrease slower than the pattern.
Decrease Row 1-3: on the palm side of each row I k3, ssk, k till the last 2 stitches then k2tog, flip work and then k all stitches on the back side of the mitten. (This evens out the extra increases the palm recieved from the thumb gusset. Now there should be an equal amount of stitches on both sides of the stitches)
Decrease rows 4-10: k3, ssk, k till last 2 stitches, k2tog, flip work, k3, ssk, k till last 2 stitches, k2tog
When down to last 12 stitches I grouped the stitches into 4 sets of 3 and did a 3 stitch decrease for each set. I did this by slipping the first stitch purlwise, k2tog, then pass the slipped stitch over the created stitch from the k2tog like you are binding off. I then cut the yarn, wove it through the last 4 stitches, fed it through the hole at the top of the mitten and finally synching it tight from inside the mitten.
Note on the thumb, I just added another repeat of rows 2-5 so that I had 3 blocks of pattern instead of two! I bound off very similarly as what I did for the mitten body but I made sure to leave the edge color (I did mine in color A) continuing till the top.
