I made 4 of these. Each took about 32 yards.

I used foundation single crochet for the button loops. I followed the pattern for the first and third cozies. For the second one, I did alternating single and double crochet for a pebbly texture. I did double crochet through the back loop on the right side, front loop on the wrong side for the last one, partly because I was concerned about running out of yarn.
