This is easy enough for a novice knitter, and the basket weave easy to remember, so no looking at a pattern; you can knit this while watching TV. This size is time-consuming, but you can adapt to any size you want.
Basically, it’s a seed stitch border with a 3/9 basket weave stitch.
I used a 40” ChiaoGoo circular, #9, to accommodate the size.
PATTERN:
CO 281 stitches. (I like Chinese waitress CO, but use what you’re comfortable with.)
Seed stitch (K, P, repeat) every row until the bottom border is as tall as you want (4-5 inches).
Place a stitch marker after the first 13 stitches and before the last 13 stitches. Those will mark your side borders. Those first and last 13 stitches are always seed stitch.
Basket weave stitch:
(Where it says repeat to end, that means repeat to the stitch marker, then finish the row with the border seed stitch; and begin each row with the border seed stitch.)
Row 1: K3, P9, K3; rep from to end.
Row 2: P3, K9, P3; rep from to end.
Row 3: K3, P9, K3; rep from to end.
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: P6, K3, P9; rep from to last 9 sts, K3, P6.
Row 6: K6, P3, K9; rep from to last 9 sts, P3, K6.
Row 7: P6, K3, P9; rep from to last 9 sts, K3, P6.
Row 8: Purl.
Rep Rows 1-8.
Continue the basket weave pattern until it’s 5 or 6 inches shorter than the finished length you want. Then do 5-6 inches of seed stitch for the top border.
Bind off. I HIGHLY recommend the Icelandic BO I used. It’s easy, and it looks great with the seed stitch. Tutorial here.
