I swatched the color dominance both ways and ended up doing it as suggested in the pattern.

Size/shape problems:

Even with an increased needle size and gauge, the thumb construction was way too narrow. I ripped back and put in a standard thumb gusset. That’s how a thumb is attached to a human hand anyway.

I also added an extra repeat of the pattern after the thumb.

These mittens are seriously tiny.
