Hens for Creme Eggs can be used for the charities Francis House Hospice/ The Innocent Big Knit

Notes

I wanted a rectangle block body to play with using different stitches (mosaic knitting) and stranded colourwork to create patterns.
Different stitches needed more/less stitches to fit so I’ve noted my findings so I can make these again.
The rows of rib each end of the body were supposed to grip the crème egg top and bottom.
The stranded colourwork also creates a thicker fabric to hold the egg.

I designed these with the Innocent Big Knit for AgeUK in mind, but also so they also fit a creme egg.
Because the Big Knit is not collecting at the moment I will donate them to the Francis House Childrens Hospice Easter Chick (and bunny) appeal. Although they are not made using their official pattern they still accepted them.

Only managed 80 before the deadline.

I made these hen bodies many different ways but this bit was always the same:
Finishing for each hen:
Add face detail before stitching up.
Fold hen in half and crochet on a beak with 2.5mm hook. I ended up using aran weight wool for a larger beak.
Beak, all in the same point: sl st to join, HDC, sl st back into the same point, cut wool and add stitches to make more beak like if necessary.
For the eyes I tied a knot three times into the loop, pulled tight and attached it to the face.
Sew up seams right side out using mattress stitch, but leave top of head open.
Comb
Using 2.5mm hook and red.
We will join the head together by using a loop from casting off from both sides of the top of the head at 3 points. This in effect joins the seam.
Point 1: Chain x4 into front of head, SC in 2nd, 3rd and 4th loops from hook, sl st into same st.
Point 2: SC into middle, Chain x4, SC in 2nd, 3rd and 4th loops from hook, sl st into same st.
Point 3: SC into back of head, Chain x4, SC in 2nd, 3rd and 4th loops from hook, sl st into same st.
