Painting with wool ‍

This colourful yarn adventure of mine received alot of interest on Instagram (thank you!) and many questions from intrigued knitters ~ so here is my promised demystification post

This is the #fatherlandsweater pattern by @olgaputanodesigns which I knitted last year (swipe to see the original finished object). Those gorgeous flowers beckoned MORE colour..

Next I overdyed the entire sweater ~ something I’ve wanted to try for ages! Thereafter I started painting in duplicate stitches, blending shades as one would do when weaving a tapestry..the “paint” being very short pieces of Yama Merino Linen Singles Yarn - the ties on the hanks to prevent tangles during dyeing actually! - (these often ends up in the bin, at about 10-15cm it’s too short to knit with)

It’s is a very time consuming and involved process which I absolutely love ~ creating wearable art

Ps! Some very concerned folks asked about the wrong or inside of the sweater well, I am lightly felting all those short ends down, creating a wonderful soft extra layer of warmth across the chest
