A most basic granny blanket involving double crochet clusters around and around. To get started I followed this tutorial by Wooly Wonders Crochet on Youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsVrg71Jgbs
Below I have typed out the basic step as per the video:
Round 1:
-
chain 3 (counts as first double crochet (DC) and make 2 x DC in the magic ring (now you have one cluster)
-
chain 3, make 3 DC into ring (now you have 2 clusters)
-
chain 3 and make 3 DC into ring (now your have 3 clusters)
-
chain 3 and make 3 DC into ring (now you have 4 clusters)
-
chain 3
-
pull the magic ring closed
-
slip stitch into top of the chain 3 (the first 3 chains that acts as a DC)
-
cut yarn and pull through the loop to fasten off
-
attach new colour in a different corner to where you stopped: make a slip knot on the hook, insert hook into the corner and pull both strands of the yarn through onto the hook (now 3 loops on the hook), pull the loop closest to the handle of the hook over the 2 new loops (pull tight). Ready to start round 2.
Round 2:
-
the attached yarn stitch counts as a DC, make another 2 x DC in the same corner, chain 3, make 3 DC into same corner space
-
chain 1, then into the next corner make 3 DC, chain 3, 3 DC (repeat for each corner) -slip stitch into top of the chain 3 (the first 3 chains of the round)
-
cut yarn and attached new colour
Round 3 and all following rounds
-
the attached yarn stitch counts as a DC, make another 2 x DC in the same corner, chain 3, make 3 DC into same corner space
-
chain 1, make 3 DC’s in the next space, repeat from star until you reach the next corner
-
chain 1 and then into the corner space chain make 3 DC, chain 3, 3 DC
-
cut yarn and join new colour and repeat round 3 until you are happy with the size of your blanket!
I am using Yama Merino Linen Singles in assorted colourways with a 3.5mm Addi crochet hook with olive wood handle, this is my favourite hook:
