Warp Worksheet

Loom and warp: Love #17
Pattern: Monk’s Belt Blocks
Materials: 8/2 cotton for warp and tabby weft, 1680 yds per spool.
Color: natural

Width: about 22”
Epi: 16
Reed: 8 dpi (new, first use). 2 ends per dent.

Initial warp ends: 22” x 16 epi = 352
Initial pattern repeat = 60 ends
~= 6 repeats (360 ends)
+ 30 ends = 390 + 8 each side = 406 + 2 FS = 408

Or - 30 ends = 330
Plus 10 each side = 350
Plus 2 FS = 352.

I think I’d like to weave over 352 warp ends.

Warp Length

5 yards
4 towels

5 yards * 352 ends = 1500 + 250 + 10 = 1760 yards
1 spool + 80 yards

Or

8 yards
7 towels
8 yards * 352 ends = 2400 + 400 + 16 = 2816 yards
1 spool + 1136 yards (almost 2 spools for warp)

5 yards for this warp.
9/7/23: The heddles are threaded.
9/8/23: The reed is sleyed.
9/9/23: The warp is tied onto the cloth beam.
It looks like all the ends are heddled properly. So we are good to go!

Weft Colors

Pattern, 8/4: 840 yds per spool

cayenne, dark red-orange (bathroom)
brun fonce, darkest brown (bathroom)

sierra, dull medium brown (bathroom)
orange brule, light medium dull orange (bathroom)

beige (bathroom or kitchen)

Tabby, 8/2: natural

For our bathroom:

Draft II:
Cayenne (8/4) with thin lines of brun fonce (8/2 doubled).

Orange brule (8/4) with thin lines of brun fonce (8/2 doubled).

With natural (8/2) for tabby.

9/9/23: there are 18 picks for the hem, and a start on the towel. 8/4 cayenne, 8/2 doubled brun fonce, and 8/2 in natural for the tabby.

9/10/23: I noticed today that there are 8 ends in the first block on the left side. It should be six ends. I will try to fix that when I get to the end of this towel.

9/11/23: I wove to 16” (half) this morning.

9/12-9/14: I took a couple days off due to covid.

9/15-9/17: I took a couple more days off due to covid.

9/18/23: almost done with the first towel.

9/23/23: finally finished with the first towel.

9/24/23: Started the second towel.

9/29/23: Finished the second towel.

For friends:

9/30/23: making one from 8/2 orange pale with 8/4 cayenne…I like this one. Done 10/4/23.

10/4/23: This one shows pale limette blocks divided by limette lines. I really like this one.
I’m doing the lines by throwing 8/2 cotton twice. It’s faster than trying to finish off both edges. I start with the thread at the edge of the towel. I throw the first time and beat. I come around the fs, then throw the second time and beat. Finally, I finish in the end by going over the fs and finishing off after 2 parts of the block. There’s only one end to cut.
15 inches woven.

10/5/23: 20 inches woven…I’ve got a headache today, and the sound of the heddles is killing me.

10/6/23: The fourth towel is finished.

The fifth towel (or napkin) is started. It is black with cayenne lines…graphic!

10/7/23: I am calling this one done. There is still considerable length of warp left, but the tension is going haywire, so I’m finishing this off with 1” of plain weave in natural.

I say that the tension is going “haywire”, but the individual warp threads are still evenly tensioned, so it should be good, right? But when I press on a treadle, some of the warps are lifting up off of the (what’s it called? The thing that the shuttle rides on over the width of the reed? shuttle race), so I’m stopping here.

9/9 to 10/7 for weaving.

For our kitchen:

Draft II:

Black with thin lines of beige or brick.
Beige or brick with thin lines of black.

With natural (8/2) for tabby.
