Using two heddles and two pickup sticks to setup my RH loom for two layers, lower layer is black, upper is blue. I may switch to a pickup stick and string heddle rod, but I’m going to try the two pickup sticks first.

I’m using my two 12.5 heddles, but the number of warp ends is the same for the pattern in the book. I’m not doing the rest of the sampler, so my short warp of ~36” should be more than enough for the pickup design.

I’ve got my warp spread, and my pickup sticks in. I’ve never had such a clean lower shed for doubleweave!

For light on top/dark on bottom:
Lift heddle 1 (blue weft)
Lower heddle 2 (black weft)
Turn upper pickup stick (blue weft)
Turn lower pickup stick (black weft)

In the pickup design, the light layer is always on top.

I’ve had to switch to string heddles on a rod with tape (thanks yarnworker, to replace my lower pickup stick. Otherwise there was no easy way to bring up my lower layer on top my blue layer so that I could pickup what I need for the pattern.

My new sequence of heddle+ movements is:

Lift heddle 1 (blue weft)
Lift heddle 1, turn pickup stick, lift heddle rod (black weft)
Turn pickup stick (blue weft)
Lift heddles 1 & 2, turn pickup stick (black weft)

This means that instead of lowering the single sets of warps for my black lower layer, I need to lift the 3 sets I’m not using.

I’ll start working the pickup again later yum

I’ve gotten thru 3 rows of the pattern! The pattern is written so that 2 warp or weft rows is represented by one square. I count, for example 18 squares on the pattern, and I then pickup 18 pairs of warp ends.

06-04-2017 Part 2

I’m now about 1/3 the way thru my pattern! It’s getting a bit quicker, too!

This is really a very wonderful technique! smile

06-04-2017 Part 3

I’ve made it to not quite halfway thru the pattern! Waaay faster than I thought it’d go.

Lots of progress today! I’m almost 3/4 finished! smile

06-09-2017

I finished! Almost. I’m done with the weaving, so I still need to weave some scrap yarn for a second header, then I’ll cut the piece off the loom, and twist the fringes. At the very end, I ran out of the blue on my shuttle, so finished the last few weft picks using only the black. This closes the two layers at the edges, but keeps them separate where the fringe is.

I’ve also added step-by-step photos for how each weft pass is set up. I’ll add the descriptions later today.

I added the descriptions for the tutorial photos. Please feel free to ask me for more details on this project.
