Made entirely with scrap yarn, which was probably not the best plan. It saved money, but all of the yarns are slightly different weights, which means some squares are uneven. I was able to fudge it, but not without knitting and frogging lots of squares along the way. And even now some of the squares are slightly bigger or smaller than the others, so sewing them together was a trying experience.
Bottom line: Use all the same yarn if you want to save yourself a lot of heartache.
This blanket is HUGE for a baby blanket. I made each square 40 stitches wide, but in hindsight I think I could have made them 30 stitches wide and still ended up with a good sized blanket.
For some reason each square was coming out slightly kite shaped - perfect triangle on one side, but elongated on the other side. The fix for this was evenly decreasing 4 extra stitches on every square while knitting with the second color (so 4 times throughout the decrease section I’d k1, ssk, knit to the last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1). This seems to do the trick.
Some of the bulkier yarn (like Red Heart Worsted) I’d only knit up to 35 stitches before beginning the second color. In that case I’d only decrease two extra times instead of 4.
