Notes

Extras: I used 1.5 yards 1.5” wide grosgrain ribbon for edging and back slit lining, and 24” of 3/4” wide twill tape for adjustment ties. You will also need a sewing machine for the finishing details.
I added some handspun corriedale natural white & natural Black to the Green Naturespun Worsted for the dicing. The difference with this hat is in the shaping, I modeled it after one that my father used to wear with his Black Watch walking-out/parade uniform (shown ca. 1955 in bottom photo) that has more fullness in front than in back, adding a slit & adjustment ribbons in center back. Most patterns I’ve seen for Balmorals are round, but I liked the way this style adopts a ‘rakish angle’ and is adjustable for many head sizes. Most military issue Balmoral style hats have less fullness than many commercially available hats, my dh likes this more compact style better & I like how it looks on him.
