Notes

This is a good project to use variegated colorways that don’t work well for other projects!

After reading an article on Interweave, I discovered that I had been doing the K5B incorrectly! You need to knit the 5th stitch down along with the ladders of all 4 stitches above it. I was about 70% done, but I decided to frog the whole thing and start over. I know, I’m nutty that way… https://www.interweave.com/article/knitting/knit-below-br...

I don’t know if it’s how I knit, but I’ve been playing Yarn Chicken with Colors 2 and 3. If I were to do this ALL over again, I would select colorways from stash of which I had 500yds or more, or I would do more boxes of Color 1, and fewer of Colors 2 & 3. A single 100g skein typically has about 450 yds, and that cuts it too close. I have about a yard left of Color 3 and I didn’t work ALL the rows that called for it - I fudged the “box count” a little bit.

There is no need to break the yarn at all the color changes. It’s very easy to just carry the unused color up the sides when you’re in the portions that use just two block colors in close proximity. I only broke off color 1 when I was done using it for a long stretch of Color 2 and Color 3. It’s a good thing, because carrying the unused color “uses” less yardage than all those cut ends.

I showed this to my adult son that last time he came over. He LOVES it and wants me to make a sweater for him using this windowpane stitch! I really want this to be a great sweater for him (the last two I’ve made haven’t fit him as well as I would like). Everything has come out to measurement, but it’s the “drape” of the knitted fabrics that have been problematic. This shawl has fantastic drape. Wish me luck! I will post a link to that project when I get it rolling.
