Watching Secret Invasion, my spouse (who is constantly dropping hints about wanting more hats) observed that the knit beanie that Nick Fury was rocking looked comfortable and classy. I admit, I was already looking for a pattern AND THE INTERNET IS GIVING ME NOTHING. The closest I could find was a website comparing it to this £120 work of art.
It wasn’t long before I realized it was a machine-knit tuck stitch, which is virtually impossible to recreate with hand-knitting because of tensioning. I spent some time browsing ravelry patterns looking for something that could give me a close simulacrum and… well, I’m still looking. Some of the projects that use Aida’s Slouch look sort of similar, maybe if i size down needles and knit it as a watch cap. I also find myself wondering what the Bifurcate hat looks like in a single color, because I was pretty happy with how that looked when it was all done.

I wrote my own pattern. i’d publish it for free, but idk anyone to do a technical review or test knits, and I don’t feel like knitting a ton more of this hat.
note: if you’re experienced with brioche, you’re going to have to fight your instincts on this. sl1yo
means what it always means. but read the other lines carefully—k1, slip yo, k1
means exactly that. You’re going to knit every regular stitch, and slip that yo until it gets brp’ed in the next row.
Like brioche, yarnovers are not counted in total stitch count
Here’s what I did, for a 25” (63.5cm) head, using worsted weight yarn (malabrigo rios):
On US7, CO 108 sts
Switch to US5
1x1 rib for a while, maybe 4 or 5 inches? you could also 2x2 rib. that might even look better
Switch to US2
Setup row: * p2tog, sl1yo 9 times, pm * (72sts)
round 1: k2, slip yo
round 2: sl1yo, brp
round 3: k1, slip yo, k1
round 4: brp, sl1yo
Continue rounds 1-4 until piece measures… idk whenever its time to start crown decreases
Crown
round 1: k2, slip yo
round 2: sl1yo, brp
round 3: k1, slip yo, k1
round 4: * brp3tog†, sl1yo, (brp, sl1yo) until marker *
until 32 sts remain, then
round 1: k2, slip yo
round 2: sl1yo, p2tog
round 3: k1, slip yo, k1
round 4: brp3tog†, sl1yo (16 sts)
Break yarn, pull through stitches, cinch, weave in ends
† your needle will go through 5 loops—3sts, 2yos
