Notes

When I showed a good friend of me my just finished Emma Brace Mock Darned Socks she told me she was going to a Knitting two socks at the same time workshop. She really is a good knitter but she convinced me that it was something for me too. Because you’re never too old something new I decided to go with her.

We had two mornings to learn how to knit two socks at the same time. The first morning we learned how to cast on using Judy’s magic cast on. After six attempts I was ready to start knitting. Now the second step followed: increasing. After two increases, the morning was over and we could continue increasing and knitting at home up to the beginning of the heel.

My sock wool came with an extra spool of thin reinforcement yarn for the heel. I decided to use this while knitting the heel. This sometimes resulted in quite a fight because the two yarns because they were often tangled. The first heel finished during the course morning.

After knitting the second heel at home it was time to knit the leg. I had already seen in te instructions that we had to use Jeny’ s surprisingly stretchy bind off. Therefore I knitted the cuffs separately so I could do the binding off with one sock just like the heel.

Husband couldn’t wait to wear the socks. He asked several times when they would be ready. As soon as they were finished, he took off his socks and the self-knitted ones were put on. The socks had a good fit around the calves and feet, but were a bit tight around the instep.

These first pairs of socks have a so-called ‘boomerang heel’. An internet search learned that this heel type is less suitable for men. The so-called French heel would be more suitable. Time to try this heel type and start knitting a second pair soon. This time I’ll start at the cuff.
