Project takeaway points:
The pattern is missing some info. There’s no gauge in pattern given, only stockinette, and no final measurements. That said, I’ve been knitting long enough that I should have remembered how substantially cables alter gauge. I also should have gone up at least 1-2 needle sizes as I am definitely a tight knitter. However, I was so concerned it would turn out too big that I CO 70 sts instead of the called-for 80 and stuck with US10.5s.
That said, I really like the cable pattern--it was a new one for me. I also like how the pattern continues to the brim. I think it has a modern and clean look. I’m already contemplating making it again, now that I have a better idea of how it’ll turn out. The crown decreases are decent, although the last cable row does get a little swallowed up by the concurrent decreases.
12/17/17 Done and blocking. I made a rather giant (39 gm/43 yds) pompom that will go on the top. The wife has promised to assemble it and take lots of pictures when it goes to its new owner today.
12/16/17 Update: I finished knitting this afternoon! I did 3 pattern repeats and then the decreases. It’s about 15” diameter and 7” tall, unstretched. The hat used 50 gm/55 yds. I’m going to give it a wash and light block tonight, and make a pompom to tie on tomorrow.
12/16/17 Change of plans: It’s turning out way too small, even for my 5yo. So, it’ll go to a toddler friend instead. I really like how it’s working up!
12/14/17 I cast on 70 instead of 80, and it was a mistake. I’m getting 18 sts/4” in the cable pattern on US 10.5s. Seeing as it’s for a secret santa exchange tomorrow, I’m getting worried…
