Notes

I used worsted weight yarn instead of sport weight yarn.

I used the German Twisted Cast On.

I used the decrease bind off from Semplice Fingerless Mitts.

For the thrums I wrapped the working yarn around the needle first and then folded the roving over the needle so that the roving was to the left of the yarn.

Instead of working pattern row 5 as k2, (t1, k3) I did (k1, t1, k2) per the New England Mittens pattern because I prefer the way the thrums line up vertically.

The pattern says to put sts on hold for the thumb when the piece measures 4.5” which would be 2.5” of rib and 2” of the thrum pattern. But looking at the pattern pictures I think the pattern is supposed to say to put the thumb sts on hold when the mitten measures 4.5” from the end of the rib.

I worked 4” in pattern (30 rnds) before the thumb instead of 4.5” per size Medium.

Since 36 sts is 1.5 roving color pattern repeats, the colors didn’t line up at the end of the round. I wanted the mismatched colors on the palm instead of the top of the hand. For the right mitten I made the thumb at the end of the round per the pattern. For the left mitten I cast off for the thumb 4 sts from the beginning of the round.

Right flip top: pick up sts starting 10 sts from beginning of round and ending 8 sts from end of round

Left flip top: pick up sts starting 12 sts from beginning of round and ending 6 sts from end of round

I placed a lifeline for picking up the sts for the flip top on the last round before the top rib.

I picked up 2 extra sts for the thumb to prevent holes and decreased to 16 sts on the first round.

I knit the thumb 1.5” long per size Large instead of 1.25” long.

I used a package of wool roving from Hobby Lobby. I used six colors. I used 4g of yellow, green, pink, and dark blue and 3g of orange and light blue.

Roving Colors:
