I have squared out the outside of the throw using the same 10.0 N/P hook.
This wool mix yarn is very thick and chunky.
Before I started the border, I did steam iron the throw with a thick towel over the top of the throw to give it a nicer appearance.
Going up a hook size of 12.0 mm. decided to put a ribbed cable border all around it and then 2 rows of SC into Back Loops only to finish.
This added 4 inches out on all sides of the throw and 8 inches to the total width.
Total width with border added is 37 inches wide and 60 inches long (5ft).
This is the you tube tutorial I used to make my border. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPaLCq4CD4k&t=5s

NOTES; 1-6 listed here at the bottom of all of the photos, I added more helpful photos for how to connect the accent colored leaves at the beginning of a row to the edge. Done by working on the wrong side of afghan.

I ended up still struggling with this written pattern even after the Helps that were sent from Britt Schmiesing via Annie’s Catalog pattern services. It took me a bit , but here are photos of how I was able to achieve a Maple Leaf pattern for my Afghan. Hope it can help others that have purchased the PDF pattern or magazine. Sometimes it just has to be a photo tutorial. It really is a brilliant pattern.

I had purchased the digital version Crochet World Magazine October 2021 with this pattern in it from Annie’s Catalog online.
I ended up sending an email message to the Annie’s catalog pattern services about the trouble with the instructions. They sent a rough diagram chart drawing along with a better written explanation for the pattern.
Here is a copy paste of my email response from Britt Schmiesing via Annie’s Catalog online;
Good afternoon Karen,
We received your email regarding the Maple Leaves Afghan pattern.
Here is some information that I have sent to other customers that has helped them with this stitch pattern.
This is a very rough diagram of the start of the row and the stitch pattern. You will treble in the 6th chain, skip 4 and then treble in the next chain. Ch 1 and place a marker there (PM), then top sc in the top of the treble crochet (as it describes in the special stitches), chain 3 and then slip stitch, chain 1 and slip stitch all in the same chain. Then also in that chain work one more treble but don’t complete it (triple crochet post).
Then skip 4 chains and work 3 partial treble crochet (because that is basically what the triple post stitch is…a treble crochet where you don’t complete the last pull through, then skip 4 sts and work a partial treble in the next chain, then yarn over and pull through all the loops on the hook thus connecting the tops of 5 treble crochets over an expanse of about 11 chains. Then chain 1 and place another stitch marker, chain 3 and slip stitch, chain 1, slip stitch in the same chain as the last partial treble. Then work the repeat. I tried to mark the repeat with a bracket at the base in my drawing. I hope this helps.
Here is more info about the top sc: This is a special stitch that the designer came up with for this pattern. Let’s see if I can explain more:
Normally when you sc you go under the top V on the stitch. For the top sc you are actually going around the side of the top of the stitch. So you will look at your treble st, turn it side ways and then sc around the top side of the treble stitch instead of into the top of the stitch like you would like to do.
So where the red arrow points in the illustration is where you will put the sc:
