I had the privilege of testing this pattern - and I love it!
I hope you do, too!
I used RHSS Aran yarn for the bodies, King Cole Riot Chunky for many of the caps. Other caps were using small balls of random worsted weight acrylic yarns.
Totoro-inspired Mushroom Sprite was made using the pattern as written then adding a crocheted circle sewn to the belly, v-like stitches embroidered on, and thick paper-wrapped stem wire shoved through the cap and the hand to look like a hooked umbrella handle.
