CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
We are looking for crocheters, knitters, weavers, or other fiber artists to build small, medium or even large simple needleworks (like granny squares) for a public art project (a Yarn Bomb) to coincide with Goldendale’s first ever garden walk, “June Blooms”, the first weekend in June.

What is a Garden Walk?
A self guided tour of local gardens/yards at the height of late spring/early summer blooming. You work hard - why not show it off? You can register your garden/yard here: June Blooms - A Goldendale Garden Walk

What is a Yarn Bomb?
A public art installation using the medium of needlework and yarn/fiber arts. Our Yarn Bomb will coincide with the Garden Walk. Check these out: examples

Do you have old Works In Progress just begging to be …somewhere else besides your stash? Well, here’s a great way to move them along in the design-build process - bind them off and donate them for public art consumption!

Do you have a pile of granny squares that never made it to the afghan stage? Let them be seen! On a tree!

Do you have time (and fresh tendons in your forearms) to production knit/crochet/weave because you’ve really been looking to “get back to needlework” or de-stash or de-stress? Here’s your chance to completely justify sitting down for a minute and mindlessly making pretty things!

Project Participation - Everyone can do it!
Do you have school age children who are interested in learning fiber arts? What about your friends, family, neighbors, retired or elderly who might enjoy having a project that will result in not only brightening up a community, but also come with a waterfall of healthy side effects for both young and old alike.

Needlework is meditative, great for dexterity, hand eye coordination, memorizing, counting, and focusing. Least of which can all lead to insurmountable levels of creativity by developing color and stitch patterns, or shapes and themes. Production needlework is also a great way to develop all those skills while also contributing to public artworks - in your own yard or elsewhere!

If you don’t know how to knit, crochet, or weave, we will have a Meet-To-Make on April 17 and be glad to teach you! Materials and tools provided. If you’d like to get started earlier than that, feel free to contact me to make arrangements.

Project Styles, Methodologies, Parameters
Needleworks have no parameters for patterns, gauge, yarn, or other major limitations regarding style, color, or finishing. It would be best to create “production” style needleworks in knit, crochet, or weaving in standardized shapes that can then be sewn together into tubes for wrapping/hanging/displaying in public spaces (sign posts, trees, benches, porch railing, etc.) For example - Granny squares are approachable and have endless variations.

Project Patterns - some cool suggestions!

  • Check out this amazing Wind Spinner crochet project! What a perfect thing for yards here in the Gorge!

  • Here is a very pretty flower-like Granny Square project that would look great during the June Blooms Garden Walk!

Project Deadlines

  • Finished needleworks received on or by May 15 (so we have time for making up/sewing and installation)
  • Installation: first week of June
  • Volunteers welcome for installation

Project Needs
If you would like to donate needlework, time, materials, tools or instruction for groups who would like to meet-to-make for a day, contact me to donate or participate at the date/time below:

Meet-to-Make & Assembly

  • Centerville Grange Hall
  • Sunday, May 15
  • 10am

We will have light refreshments at our Meet-to-Make day. Feel free to bring a lunch or potluck item.

Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk
We’d really like to make the June Blooms garden tour and yarn bomb a colorful community effort and event for both locals and tourists to enjoy. With your participation, it’s a sure thing!
