Notes

Although this shawl has some very lovely features, something about the size/dimensions made it unusable. In the first photo, it appears that it falls short of being an actual half-circle, though I don’t recall that being the case, but that is how it fit as well. I have since frogged it and will reuse the yarn in another shawl.

Right now I’m so utterly disappointed and disgusted that I can’t imagine ever knitting another Hemlock Ring, even with modifications (which would include extending it to 3/4 circle if not larger, and seeing whether there’s another way to make it fuller). I would probably knit another Freya Shawl instead.
I knocked the pattern to a 2-star rating because I had to search for how many to cast on, and it didn’t give instructions for ssp (see below).

Dimensions: 14” neckline, 74” bottom, 24” length

Should I ever make another one, I would make it at least 3/4 circle (8 repeats), maybe larger. I would also add beads to the bottom row of yos or maybe as I’m casting off.

The length is good. The distance between “waves” at the shortest length was 12”.

Recommendation: Before you start knitting, make sure you know how to do a ssp. I did mine backwards. I didn’t realize it until I was around row 79. :(

I had one heck of a time digging through the instructional text to find how many to cast on. Started w/48st cast on, but thought it was too wide (ha!), so I started over w/5-stitch seed stitch border on each side in lieu of the 10-stitch edge. (Had I added the other 12 stitches, it still would not have been sufficiently wide.)

RS: odd numbered rows

NOTE: Did not add extra stitch on both sides since I used a border, hence body is 24 st, not 26 st. Numbers below reflect the -2.

Cast on 34 st, placing markers after stitch 5 and each 4 stitches thereafter until last 5 stitches. (5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29)

Stitch count (excludes 10 stitch border):
Rows 1-6: 24 (6x4)
Row 7: 18 (6x3; dbl yo = 1)
Rows 8-16: 66 (6x11)
Rows 17-18: 72 (6x12)
Rows 19-20: 90 (6x15)
Rows 21-22: 84 (k1+(5x14) +(1x13))
Rows 23-24: 85 (k1+(6x14))
Rows 25-26: 102 (k1+(5x17)+(1x16))
Rows 27-28: 102 (k2+(5x17)+(1x15))
Rows 29-30: 102 (6x17)
Rows 31-32: 102 (6x17)
Rows 33-38: 114 (6x19)
Rows 39-43: 126 (6x21)
