My first shadow knitting project!
And, as you can see, it developed a life of its own and was heavily modified with leafy edgings.
The yardage is an extremely rough guess because the pink ball had been mostly used, and the largest part of the purple was used in the borders (especially the “Scalloped Leaves” pattern).
1/8/2013 - completed rectangle. Debating about adding leaf border. On hold till I have some quiet time to calculate numbers for selected border.
Patterns considered for leaf border:
Fadenidylle Fichu (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fadenidylle-fichu), which is pretty much Scalloped Leaves (Epstein, p. 120), but without the typos.
Windblown Leaf Border (Epstein, p. 117)
Leaf Fringe (Epstein, p. 118)
I chose the Scalloped Leaves edging, but I couldn’t visualize it and kept connecting it initially on the wrong side until I finally charted it. The original four stitch border seemed too wide and the garter clashed with the texture of the wrap, so I decided to use a 2-stitch border and reverse stockinette for all but the leaves. (See chart.)
The turquoise blocks on the chart were made just to draw my attention to the stem stitches that I kept forgetting to do. Also (if image is not corrected): the double decrease on Row 17 was actually a s1 k2tog psso.)
The borders were knitted on doing the two long sides first, then each of the short ends, which extended to the end of the long borders.
I used Scalloped Leaves along one of the long sides and later across one short side; I reversed the chart to knit a mirror image on the other long side.
The Windblown Leaf Border was for the 4th (short) side, just for something different. At first, I didn’t care for how the straight stems were perpendicular to the stripes of the body of the wrap, but now it doesn’t look so bad. However, were I to do it over again, I would have started the two stems at the edges of Windblown pattern down in the border below it; however, not being familiar with the patterns, that would take some charting and/or calculation
Used much smaller needles (US 6?) for the borders.
This project began with a need for a lot more concentration than I’d expected.
I love charts, but I have a b&w printer, so the chart came out in white, black, and illegible dark gray.
I initially tried coloring in the blocks, but it was still difficult to follow, so I wrote out the instructions for the even rows.
That made all the difference!
Knitting is much faster now, just remembering the numbers of stitches between changes.
I chose this project to see whether I’d like shadow knitting before investing in a big project (specifically, the Illusions of Grandeur shawl).
After the initial “Ooh -- that’s awesome!” novelty of shadow knitting, I’m drawn back to more traditional knitting, at least for now.
I’m not fond of Pound of Love -- I have a lot of problems with splittiness, pilling, and over-stretchiness, and the borders will not lay flat. But it is good enough for a test project that will be given away either to a friend or the nursing home.
