This was SO fun to make. I wasn’t sure I’d like it, and in fact was pretty sure I wouldn’t, but it looks adorable on Brooklyn.
All the color changes made it much more time-consuming than a hat of one color, but it really was fun.
I followed this YT video called DIY Supreme-Inspired Crochet Beanie Hat | Scrap Yarn Project by Iconic Trendz (Akia) for the color change technique, but used the Easy Ribbed Beanie pattern for measurements.
I used a larger hook because I didn’t want it to be dense with two strands of worsted weight; Iconic Trendz used a 6mm and the designer of this pattern used a 6.5mm (for chunky yarn).
Mine is made with more neutral colors than the original, and it really changed the overall look. I actually don’t like it as much as the original.
For each section, I tried to use a light color and a dark color, switching one out every other row or so.
To fray the ends, I trimmed them short, like at the most 1/2” long, and then combed them through with an eyelash comb (after thoroughly cleaning it). It worked perfectly except it broke one of the teeth.
I started with a foundation half double row of 24 stitches and then added 4 foundation single crochets for a total of 28 stitches. It originally measured about 11 inches, but I thought for sure it would grow. It didn’t, so next time, I’ll do a few more hdcs.
I stopped at 34 rows, which made the rectangle 19.5” wide and 10” tall. I used the slst seam method and two strands were used to close the top (in the video, she just uses one).
MEASUREMENTS:
Weight: 4.38 oz
Yardage: approx. 217 yards
Unfolded brim: 10” tall
Brim width: 10” wide
Next time I’ll make it longer by a few stitches I think. I’ll also try to use more bold colors than this one. Also, I will go through both loops on the first and last stitch of each row even though neither pattern suggests it.
