Elsa Schiaparelli created the first hand-knitted trompe l’oeil sweater that was an immediate success. In black and white, black and bright colors, with bow patterns, geometric shapes, skeleton, pierced hearts, sailor tattoo or abstract turtle, the sweater was adopted by actresses and celebrities of the time. Vogue called it a masterpiece. The United States immediately seized it and made it a bestseller.
