In Aran weight yarn, with smaller needle CO 72 sts.
Knit in 1 x 1 twisted rib for 1.5”
Purl one round.
Switch to larger needle and,
Knit in pattern for 5.5”
Pattern:
K3, P1, K1, P1, repeat to end of round
K3, P1, K1B, P1, repeat to end of round
at 5.5” (or height to achieve desired hat body length) begin X crown decreases as follows:
Divide sts evenly across 4 DPNs or Magic loop with markers at quarter points.
Rnd 1)
K1, SSK, knit in pattern to 3 sts before next DPN or marker, K2Tog, K 1
Rnd 2) Knit in pattern except knit where K1B is on or near the decrease markers.
Continue with rounds 1 & 2 until you have 16 sts total (4 on each DPN or between markers)
Cut yarn with 16” tail, pull through remaining 16 sts and close tightly.
Weave in ends.
Block gently.

Note:
A squishier yarn like Osprey is preferable for this design. It’s very soft, lovely to knit with and never itches. :)
