My Math for this project is out of this world, all so I can avoid keeping track of BOG haha. It might not be exactly how you’re supposed to magic loop, but I really enjoy keeping sole + top stitches on separate needles and just working them all at once. In theory the same math applies if you were to do the project cuff down as well.
18 May: Started off cuff down and immediately made a mistake… Couldn’t be bothered casting on 84 stitches again so just switched to toe up haha.
20 May: Frogged again! Haha. Large was just way too big, turns out I misunderstood was foot circumference meant, and I’m close to a M than an L. Got past the toe on 1 sock but it was just too loose. After doing the charts for the first time I realised how straightforward they were and so cast on again TAAT!. Nananana… math time!
I had to throw open a spreadsheet to do all the math… It’s possible I’ve overthought this somewhat.
25 May: Finished! I have socks that fit… but not quite lol. Ran out of wool while doing the cuff and only got 2.5 repeats of the pattern before rushing the ribbing and binding off with cm’s to spare. Somehow even with the pattern the heel is a tiny bit too long, I need to adjust my template to bring the ankle cuff down a bit more. Realised how close I was living life to the edge and had to call it at a pair of ankle socks.
Fit wise I went all the way from L to M on 2.25mm and now even contemplating sticking with S on 2.5mm! 64 round seems to be the magic number for me, 72 was too loose even on the smaller needles.
I had all this fancy math to make working the ribbing even, before realising all the way at the cuff that doing them TAAT made it impossible to shift stitches around…!
Mods: Magic Loop, TAAT, JMCO, Toe up, Fish Lips Kiss Heal and upside down charts.
Thoughts while on the train! (Revised for M size)
Toe Rounds
CO: 24 (12 each needle), K 1 round
Increase up to 72 (36 each needle, 24 increases required)
(Round 1: K1, M1L, K to last 2, M1R, K1
Round 2: K to end) * 12 rounds
Pattern/Foot length rounds
Pattern Side - K8, Pattern as set (knit it upside down no big), K8 (36 on needle)
Sole Side - K36
Knit x repeats of pattern until reaching heel
Heel
Experiment with 36/3? So 12/12/12. Looking at the notes for FLKH I only have to carry the stockinette up for an inch so should be able to pick the pattern straight back up for the back of the sock!
Increase Round
The math for the ribbing + pattern requires 74 stitches, so now we have to increase by 2
Front: K8, Pattern as set (knit it upside down no big), K8 (36 on needle), Back: K1, M1L, Knit to end 2 stitches, M1R, K1 (38 on needle)
Cuff
Front - K8, Pattern as set (knit it upside down no big), K8 (36 on needle)
Front - K9, Pattern as set (knit it upside down no big), K9 (38 on needle)
Ribbing
Confusing because we have 8 stitches and 9 stitches on both sides, but ribbing only requires multiples of 5.
Just have to remember where we are with the ribbing as we work our way around!
Bind off! That’s the plan anyway haha.
