Notes

I’ve been looking for a pattern for this yarn. The thick-thin yarn will give this a different look. I’ve changed the name of my project to reflect my Melbourne eastern suburbs origins.

It was a slow start with a bit of re-doing to fix mistakes due to my inattention. I read that someone else had put markers between each pattern repeat so I tried that. It helps me pick up a mistake before I move on.
I’m not fond of the stocking stitch gussets at the side seams and under the arms but I’m sticking with it.
I have the hang of the pattern now and knitting is moving along.

So, up to the sleeves. I’m happy with the length of the body up to the bottom of the armholes. I had wondered if I could make the sleeves longer without running out of yarn (I suspect it will be a close thing). I had a plan of having my remaining yarn and knitting the sleeves until I ran out. I see that won’t work as the body is not completed until I’ve done the sleeves up to a point. Not looking forward to trial and error either. Oh well, here goes!

So far I’ve knitted the sleeves to the same size as the bodice. I’m happy with 3/4 sleeves but they are snug. I’m doing an extra increase round, so 7 pattern repeats and 14 stitch increases. I’ve seen in other project notes that blocking helps (although I am using 40%cotton yarn). That should be plenty of upper arm room. I’m more worried about the amount of off shoulder pulling there looks to be in some others projects. I might also need another pattern repeat to get enough length. It’s going to be trial and error.

After a week away from knitting I hoped I was making progress. I decided to try the 2nd sleeve in the next size up. It seems to be a better fit, especially at the cuff. I just about had it to the length to join to the bodice, after a bit of messing about when I noticed a mistake about 2 pattern repeats back and had to rip back and fix. Optimistic that all I had to do was reknit the 1st sleeve to match. Then I notice a whole row mistake way down at the bottom of the sleeve. My inattention. My bad. I don’t think I can leave it. So over this.

So after days without facing my stuff up I’m back re-knitting the first sleeve, making sure to check my work. At least I’m going forward again.

I put this aside at the start of winter to do some other little projects. I really must get going again before the weather warms up. Just one more project first, really!

Time to get this finished. It’s been snoozing for too long. Spring is nearly here and I’ve ordered some yarn for my next project. Started doing the top decreases after joining the sleeves months ago. So far, so good.

Just getting over deciding if it’s likely to fit and should I continue or frog. Decide it’s all good. Continue. Not far to the top of the shoulders when I notice a mistake I made at the start of the neckline decrease. Rip it back to the lifeline at the sleeve join and do it again. It wasn’t something I could leave. My own inattention at fault.
I just want to get it finished now.

Finished apart from the buttons. Perhaps I should have made the next size up, but the sleeves would still have been snug. I’ll see how it blocks. If I wasn’t so over it I could consider frogging and doing again. I have plenty of yarn over. But I already feel like I’ve knitted it several times over already with the frogging and tinking. Mostly due to my inattention, once or twice I dropped a stitch. The lace pattern isn’t difficult.

I’ve been border-line about frogging and starting again, but now it’s had a wash and eased out a little I think I’m happy. I might have made the next size up if I did it again. And maybe continue the pattern into the area under the arms and on the sleeves. But allowing that the design is a snug fit I think it’s OK.
I’ll see what it looks like when I find some suitable buttons that don’t cost more than the yarn. 9 is a tricky number for the size required when so many are sold on cards of 8 now.
