10/19/14-- Getting started… I want to make sure that I have all my ducks in a row before I dive head-first in to this project. I’m planning on making a women’s medium, but I am going to swatch first to make sure that size works for me.
I’m really loving the yarn and roving I chose for this- the Knitpicks worsted is very soft and a beautiful color. The roving is super fluffy and again, very very soft. It has subtle variegation in shades of orange, and even some pinks thrown in. Its so pretty, I don’t want to un-braid it!
10/22/14-- I realized I needed to go down a size in needles and I think I am going to use this cast-on method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wf8cY_djTRI
11/11/14-- After starting mitten 1 and knitting about 10 rows into the thrum pattern, I decided I wasn’t happy with how it was coming out. I had messed up the 2x2 ribbing, was following the thrum pattern wrong on the thumb gusset, as well as making my thrums too big. I decided to frog the whole thing and start from scratch. Boy am I glad I did! I did the ribbing correctly this time, as well as making my thrums smaller, and editing the thrum pattern on the gusset to make it flow with the hand pattern better.
I’m toying with the idea of making these convertible mittens, but I am nervous about altering a pattern- its not something I like to do very often. I might throw in a life line and try the convertible style and if I don’t like it, I can always go back and do them in the traditional style.
11/17/14 I did end up making these convertible. I used flap instructions from this pattern: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/flip-top-mittens-...
and I really like how its turned out.
12/1/14 Finished up mitten #2. The finishing on these takes a bit, but I feel like they were well worth the effort!
