Notes

I’m in one of those awful project starting phases. I was looking through my yarn looking for something for a different project and saw my Manos Silk Blend, which I love but I only have 2 skeins of it and wondered what kind of project I could do with it that wouldn’t be a cowl or a hat or a small scarf. Then I realized I could use it in combination with silk mohair, of which I have lots from an Arizona yarn shop closeout sale several years ago, and I could make a larger lace shawl with the addition of the other yarn. I found a rose pink shade of mohair yarn that matches perfectly with the Manos Silk Blend.

I want this to be a shawl instead of a scarf, so I’m going to do more repeats of the border pattern. Using only the mohair yarn, I’ll repeat the middle 32 rows of the border pattern 5 times, and in addition to the 14 starting rows and the 12 ending rows, it’ll be a total of 186 rows. When I pick up the slipped-stitch edge, that’ll be 93 stitches plus 1 extra on each end, plus I’ll add a stitch in there (total 96 stitches) for the body. I’ll do the body with both Manos and mohair until I run out of Mano silk blend yarn, then do the second border with just the mohair. I think I’ll have enough mohair yarn, but just to be sure, I weighed the first border after I finished (16 g) to make sure I have enough mohair for the second border.

This pattern originally has a drop stitch pattern in the middle, but I think I’m instead going to use a modified Wave Stitch from The Harmony Guides Lace and Eyelets, book, which is a modified drop stitch pattern.

My modified Wave stitch:
multiple of 6 + 1
1st row in mohair: k1, ** KW2, KW4 twice, KW2, k2, rep from ** to end
2nd row in mohair: knit, dropping all extra loops
3rd & 4th rows in Manos silk: knit
5th row in mohair: KW3 (not KW4), KW2, k2, KW2, ** KW4 twice, KW2, k2, KW2, rep from ** to last 2 stitches, KW3, k1
6th row in mohair: as 2nd row

9/13/2013: finished knitting, now I need to find time to block it.

10/23/2013: Finally got around to blocking this. Blocked a little aggressively, I blocked it at 7.5 feet long and a little over 3 feet wide.

I absolutely love these yarns and the patterns. The mohair is delightfully pink without being Barbie pink and the yarn is light and airy. The colors of the silk yarn are absolutely perfect for the mohair pink color and they had just enough weight to give the shawl some drape. The wave pattern makes the silk ripple in a really nice effect in good lighting. The lace pattern at each end really opened up nicely. I am so stinkin’ proud of this shawl! I can’t wait to wear it!
