This piece was awarded 2nd place in the Sculpture section of the Dungog Arts Society annual exhibition.
The base is a beanie crocheted with two strands of 4ply yarn in each row- one strand is a slubby, pink-and-white variegated cotton and the other strands are 5-8 ply cotton, wool, mohair, silk and synthetic yarns, giving an overall impression of skin tone. The beanie is edged with a skin-pink feathers yarn.
From the beanie come nine rainbow-toned, spheroided “stalks”, which go from purple (near the head) to hot pink “eyeballs” at the end of the stalks. The stalks start with three purple spheroids, then two blue, two blue-teal, one green, one yellow and one orange before the actual hot pink “eye”.
At the base of each stalk is a rounded pink section, bulging up from the “scalp” of the beanie. This is topped with a sparkly, variegated, rainbow coloured feathers-type yarn before the stalks’ spheroids begin.
The eyeballs themselves were made separately in white 4ply wool with variegated rainbow “pupils” before being stuffed and sewn into the hot pink surroundings.
The stalks are padded and wired and feature cables, berry stitch, entarsia zigzags, stripes, bobbles etc.
They can be bent into various positions and “bounce” as the wearer moves.
This piece is a tribute to old sci-fi films… “It Came From…” and my own love of bright colour. It’s FUN!
