Have been wanting to crochet mittens, but had a hard time finding a pattern I really liked, until I seen these. Since I am using worsted weight yarn, I am making the heavy weight version of these mittens.

I am not going to lie, I struggled with this pattern. I owe a huge “Thank You” to the designer, Lyn Robinson. Without her, I would have never been able to make these. Of course, I have to always make things harder for myself, and when I seen shelleyjjoyce’s version of these mittens, I knew I wanted those. But, since she used a much thinner yarn this meant some changes. Thank you shelleyjjoyce for the charts and notes, beautiful adaptation of a stunning pattern!

Here is what I did. I decided to make the medium in worsted weight. I have always wanting to learn to do foundation single and double crochet, so this was a good opportunity.

  1. I started with 32 FDC.

  2. Row 1 as written. But, I kept messing this row up and ending with more stitches. I counted the chain 2, but then did the FPDC around the initial FDC of first round. Where, since the chain 2 counts as a stitch, the first front post stitch should be around the 2nd stitch of initial row. (It took me numerous froggings and Lyn’s help to realize what I was doing wrong), but alas, round 1 ended with correct stitches and I joined to the chain2.

  3. Row 2-7 (I made cuff longer) Repeat row 1, remembering chain 2 counts, as to do the fdc’s on top of previous ones, same with fdc’s.

  4. This is where I started using shelleyjjoyce’s pattern for cable stitches.
Row 1 .- This is substitution for Row 1 of main left glove of original pattern. I did the set up row from shelleyjoyce, but combining with original pattern and my stitch count. Here is exactly what I did (parenthesis are shelley’s pattern, I hope it is okay that I copy this. Ch.2, esc in first 2……“FPDC, BPDC, esc in next 2 sts, FPDC around next 2 sts, esc in next 3 sts, BPDC, FPDC”… esc in next 18..

Row 2. - Row 2 of original pattern, but subsittuted middle 11 stitches (cable pattern) with shelley’s round 1 of cable pattern..
Exactly what I did
Ch 2. Esc in first 2…… FPDC, BPDC, popcorn, esc, cable cross, esc, popcorn, esc, BPDC, FPDC …….esc in next 18.

I continued this way, cycling through Shelley’s cable pattern, substituting middle of original pattern, until round 14 where I started the thumb..

Round 14. Ch. 2, Esc in first 2, (this round falls in round 3 of cable pattern, her charts were quite a bit of help for keeping on track)….. fpdc, bpdc, right cross, esc in next 2 sts, left cross, esc, bpdc, fpdc… Now I continued with original pattern for thumb hole (falls in different row, but this is where it seemed right on my mitten)..Work 5 6 fsc. Skip last 6 st. Join with sl st to top of ch 2.

Round 15, back to starting with ch.2 esc, substituting middle of cable pattern and ending with 18 esc..

Will update when I start my decreases, but really needed to make sure I had these notes for when I made the right hand.
esc in next 12 st.

I originally started decreases on round 30, so pattern would end with alternate cable row one (suggested to end on row 1 or 7 of alternate cable pattern). However, mittens were coming out much too long.
So, I started decreased on round 26, so pattern would end on round.
However, with alternate cable, decreasing in an actual cable wasn’t looking right to me, so I decided to change this, using original pattern, just moving things around a bit.
Round 26 - Ch.2, 2Esctog (decrease made) across first 2 stitches, (this falls in round 5 of alternate cable pattern, so I continue as follows) fpdc, bpdc, left cross, esc in next 2 sts, right cross, esc, bpdc, fpdc …then another 2esctog and finish with esc…

Round 27 - repeat round 26, using round 6 of alternate cable pattern in middle. However, in this round I do the 2esctog in stitch right before cable pattern and 1’st stitch of cable pattern, and 2bd 2esctog on last stitch of cable pattern and 1st. esc after cable pattern. This way they evenly decrease the cable pattern on both sides.
This round starts with ch.2, 2esc., bpd………

Round 28- same concept just doing decreases on top of old ones, going in one stitch.

Round 29 repeat 28 adding a decrease in middle of palm.

Round 30. Same as round 28. Done.

Right hand--

Cuff - same-

Setup row.

Rounds 1-14 same with thumb hole on 14. for these rounds just follow original pattern along with substituting alternate cable.

Continue to round 26 where start decrease. Instead of decreasing where pattern states decrease in the two stitches before cable pattern and two after.

Round 27, same using first and last stitch of cable pattern.

Round 28 same, just keep doing decreases on opposite sides.

Round 29 repeat 28 adding a decrease in middle of palm.

Round 30. Same as round 28. Done.

11-13-2016

Thumb- I have especially small thumbs, so I only wanted to start with 13 stitches.
Round 2 of thumb I actually decreased by one.
Round 3-6 no decreases
round 7-8 decrease by one stitch on each round.
round 9, closing round as pattern.
