Notes

This is a square for a patchwork quilt to celebrate the 50th anniversary in 2021 of the Irish Recorder and Viol Course at An Grianan, the headquarters of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association, near Termonfeckin in Ireland.

The first picture shows one of a series of of pencil and watercolour drawings of Aran knitting designs which are displayed at An Grianan. These were drawn by E Rivers in the early 1940s, and are mentioned in the classic book “Patterns for Guernseys, Jerseys and Arans” by Gladys Thompson (page 162).

The second picture shows the back of a cardigan I made in the 1970s based on the drawing. It was made of proper unwashed, undyed Aran wool, and is still going strong.

The third and fourth pictures are my knitting for the patchwork quilt square and the final framed block. I knitted the square with a fine cotton yarn. This seemed more appropriate for a quilt than bulky yarn. I hope it mimics Aran knitting successfully.
